How much do personal trainers earn?

Want to know how much personal trainers earn? Can you earn good money as a personal trainer? These are common questions I’m asked by visitors thinking of becoming a personal trainer.

When people think of personal trainers, they often think of celebrities like Cheryl Cole who reportely paid her personal trainer £14,000 or Britney Spears’ reported £11,000 per month fitness regime but what’s the reality for normal personal trainers. How much can you expect to earn?

So how much do certified personal trainers earn?
If employed by gym, the typical personal trainer salary in the UK will be between £17,000 to £25,000/PA in the first year and increasing according to experience.

Location also obviously has a big impact on this.

Pay in the big cities and particularly London being far higher than towns and smaller cities.

A certified personal trainer salary can be even higher, with the average approaching £30,000.

On these figures, personal training as a career choice compares very favourably to other jobs and comes out at the top of of the average salary scale in the UK (£25,900 in 2009 according to Office of National Statistics). But it can be even higher.

Go freelance as a personal trainer

How much do personal trainers earnSelf-employed, otherwise known as freelance, personal trainers can earn significantly more, usually between £25,000 to £40,000 – with a typical fee per session of between £20 and £50 – but this of course depends upon the numbers of hours worked, the services offered, location and of course how good they are,rates of £70/hour aren’t uncommon.


Finally, personal trainers often opt to specialise or focus on a particular skill set or client type for which higher rates can be charged, doubling or tripping their fee’s in the process and perhaps break into the £150 per hour rate like charged by Dax Moy or Matt Roberts, two of the leading trainers in London.

It may be only a few exercise pro’s who land contracts with A-List celebrities and earn tens of thousands a month but the great thing about personal training is that with perservance, drive, determination and a lot of hard work it’s achiveable.
